So, we can say in my own words that the Principle of Design are the rules and guidelines that help in the formation of good, aesthetic and well balanced designs. These principles may vary slightly in documentations and publications but are built around the following major concepts:

I. Balance: In design, balance is the visual weight of elements in our composition. We use balance to add structure and create emphasis in our designs. Our designs can be balanced Symmetrically, Asymmetrically or Radially which gives various feels and looks to our design depending on the feeling we’re trying to pass out.

II. Contrast: As the name suggests contrast is used to show fundamental opposites in our design which may be dark/light, soft/hard, fast/slow. When we talk of contrast, many times people only consider colors but there are many forms of contrast which include: shape, color, orientation and so many more. Contrast is important as it creates interesting relationships between elements and also gets the attention of the audience.

III. Proximity: Proximity deals with the idea that “birds of the same feather flock together” that is to say, when we design we design we should group like elements together, for example, it will make more sense to group all social media icons in a design together. Proximity also conveys to the viewer that there is a sense of relationship among some elements.

IV. Hierarchy: This is a principle of design that deals with the arrangement of design elements such that it influences the order in which the viewer perceives what it sees. Hierarchy helps the user to travel through a design bringing to highlight the elements or things that are more important. It is also a very key principle as it helps achieve visual organization.

V. Repetition: This is a principle of design that deals with making sure that key elements like color, structure and layout remain constant in the designs. Having repetition in our design is useful as it creates a comfortable or familiar environment for the viewer as they move across pages of the design.

VI. Negative Space: Negative space or White Space as it is usually called is the part of our design that contains no elements or content. It is very important to design as it helps give the other elements room to breathe and also helps in creating a sense of balance in our design.

So, all these principles when combined and taking into consideration helps us create the “perfect” design, I have discussed the key principles of design using words as best as I can and hope anyone who comes across this picks up one or two things.

One thing I noticed from the videos and write ups I’ve had the chance to read is that it seems in one way or the other we apply an aspect of UI/UX to our lives, starting from how we arrange our apartments to the color of clothes we choose or how comfortable we feel in certain clothes all this in little ways relate to UI/UX.
In my own understanding, UI (User Interface) deals with the appearance and display of an app, a service or a product. UI is what gets our attention, it’d more about the aesthetics and attraction a product can have on its users, while UX( User Experience) deals with the usability of an application or a product, how easy it is for a user to navigate and use a product. User Experience deals with Efficiency, Effectiveness and Satisfaction.
I also got to look at the steps to becoming a UX designer and saw the career opportunities available and I’m excited to begin this journey.**
